Do I have something set up wrong somewhere? Is my AV receiver somehow incompatible with the digital stereo audio output from Netflix, and if so what format would a replacement need to be compatible with? Or is the TV/app not passing audio to the optical output correctly? It's rather inconvenient to have to switch audio settings depending on what's being watched. Unfortunately, either workaround means 5.1 surround output is disabled. The problem can be worked around by either setting the TV's digital audio output to "bitstream" instead of "auto", or by setting the sound output to "TV speakers" and letting the optical output act as a headphone output. Not sure if they work if you put them on a stick or OneDrive and play them through the video app, but I have a Plex media server set up at home and used the Plex app to test surround sound with the Dolby Digital Plus Channel Check video from the site above. This is a problem for most TV programme streams, since they only have the stereo option. If I play a film with 5.1 sound (which works), and use the app's "audio and subtitles" menu to choose the stereo audio track, no sound plays. The problem is in the TV's Netflix app, where sound will play if the title has 5.1 surround audio, but NOT if it only has stereo audio.

Digital TV plays in stereo, PS3 plays in 5.1 surround (Dolby Digital) or stereo, Youtube plays in stereo (edit: no it doesn't, my mistake) - the TV and receiver appear to be set up correctly and compatible. But if you’re impatient to have this 4K capability (and if you have the right equipment), you can download the APK.My TV (KDL-50W829B) is set up to play through an external audio system, connected to the TV's optical output.

You can stream high-quality audio on most titles available with 5.1 surround sound or Dolby Atmos. At publication time, it includes: At publication time, it includes: Apple TV 4K (requires tvOS 12. quality to give you a cinematic experience at home. So the only way you can watch it through Android TV is through Sony’s high-end smart TVs, which aren’t technically Android TV devices. Netflix’s support for Dolby Atmos varies from device to device, and that list changes regularly. I have had a Roku HD player, and a Samsung Blu-ray player. However, Netflix for instance does typically not include several types of audioformats in their streams. There is nothing wrong with your Apple TV, but until they change something on their end, you will only get 2 channel stereo from Netflix, as that is the only audio signal they stream. Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Digital and PCM is available, the TV will send Dolby Digital to the Beam. In the end, the company determined that a 5.1-channel Dolby Digital Plus soundtrack could be compressed down to 640 kbps a 10:1 compression ratio when compared to a 24-bit 5.1-channel studio master. To my knowledge, Netflix does not provide Dolby Digital 5.1 surround on any of their streamed content. But the Nexus Player, the Razer Forge TV, and the ADT-1 are only up to 1080p. Netflix conducted internal listening tests, and consulted listening test results provided by Dolby, as well as a number of scientific studies. The NVIDIA Shield set-top box will be available later this month or early June. If not, your device may not support this feature. To check if your device supports 5.1 audio, go to any Netflix original to see if there is a 5.1 audio option. However, it is supported in the Netflix app for Windows 8 and Windows 10.

But as for Android TV devices, the only one that is capable of 4K resolution isn’t even in the market yet. 5.1 surround sound is not currently supported while streaming on a computer using Microsoft Silverlight or HTML5. Some of Netflix’s original programs like House of Cards and Daredevil are in 4K, if you’re a subscriber to their $12 a month premium plan. The only problem with this is that it will only work with compatible hardware which is still very limited, and will only apply to shows offered in 4K resolution, which are also not that many yet.
